I reached a plateau in my workout and decided to try a kick boxing class…I was always interested so I tried it!
The instructor was the bomb! Before the class started he pulled all the first timers to the side to show them the basic moves. I was in that group, he took his time with each of us by showing us the basic moves and allowing us to demonstrate them individually. He showed us our resting stance as we punched, according to our dominant hand depending on what you write with. This was the stance that would help us punch with the most power! Once he was done showing us the basic moves he said, “I won’t show you everything because then you won’t come back!” We all laughed and got geared up. He also told us that we won’t get everything right the first, second, or third time but to keep going and coming back.
We went back to the main area and joined the others and grabbed a spot near a punching bag. The bright lights were turned off, the neon lights came one and the music began to blast! The excitement and anticipation welled up as we began! We started with simple moves as we listened to his commands over the mic. After the warm up (side note: the newbies looked at each other like that was only the warm up lol), he announced that we were about to go into the combos and to listen and follow what move he tells us to do…
The instructor: Combo #1-Right, left, up, down, right hook, jab-jab-jab, jump back, go low, up down, right left, hook-hook, duck down, kick, jab, up-up!!!!
My thoughts: Wait a minute!!!!!!!!! What?! kickity kick punch up down….I’m messing up but let me keep going lol
The instructor: Combo #2 up, down, up, down, right, left, hook, jab, bounce, go low, side punch, kick-kick, etc
Me: Oh look at her, she is killing it! She must come all the time! I can’t keep up with what he is saying so ill just look at her and follow what she is doing! As time passes….ok I’m getting it!
The instructor: Some people are in the wrong stance because they are watching other people instead of listening to my voice! That’s one thing I don’t like….
I look down and I’m clearly in the wrong stance because I had to reposition myself to see and imitate the other lady. But I couldn’t hear what he was saying so I thought it would be better to imitate what the other lady was doing….I didn’t know His voice because I was new. I needed to come more often to learn the combos and his voice. Can anybody see where God was going with this lesson?
I hope so. 🙂
